The story of my ring! Greg (and my mom) love this show called Antiques Roadshow. Well, today we had a little adventure learning about my grandmother’s opal ring. First of all, it’s a cat’s eye, but the rarest, most valuable cat’s eye, called a chyrosberyl.
First we went to Marx Jewelers. The man there was very sweet. We’d been referred by a friend. He said right of that the ring’s diamonds were cut in a very old fashioned manner that meant they were older than my grandmother. He said they were rose cut, which is not used anymore. He also said it was a cat’s eye, not an opal.
Maybe this ring was my great-grandmother’s as well? In fact, he said he thought it was 200 years old (turned out to be wrong). We also looked at an eterinity band, which this jeweler said he would cut a channel underneath one side of my ring to lock it into place.
We decided to go to a few other jewelers to just get second opinions. The next place we went was horrible. They were so unfriendly and unhelpful, we left pretty quickly.
The third place introduced the idea that the diamonds were antique, but the ring was probably a resetting of them in a more modern design, from between the 40s and 60s. He mistakenly said it was a tiger’s eye (they are darker and cheaper). He then suggested we go see a jeweler who specialized in vintage. This is when we were referred to Maloy’s.
Here we worked with a lady that knew her stuff. She immediately cleaned the ring. She told us that the cat’s eye is a chyrsoberyl, which is the most expensive type. She said the settings on the diamonds are good.
We then talked about wedding bands. She said the idea of cutting into my ring to fit an eternity ring would have been disatrous, resulting in weaking the ring and losing some of the diamonds. So we found a fan ring that makes a shape that contours around the ring.
In her case, she had a platinum vintage band of such a type, which seemed to be my ring’s mate. Everything is getting slightly resized and I will have my engagement ring in 10 days, and Greg will have the band to give me on our wedding day. We are thrilled.
